Alexa Ranking is a global ranking system (and a subsidiary of Amazon.com) that uses web traffic data to list the most popular sites. It was created in 1996 by Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat.
Alexa provide a websites ranking and offers also statistics and information about them : by whom it was registered, their speeds, the number of links pointing to them, the number of their visitors, etc.
Alexa ranking is based on the number of unique visitors and the number of pages viewed by each visitor. The calculation of this average over the last three months gives Alexa's "traffic rank".
The lower the Alexa rank of a website, the more popular and better it is.
Traffic and engagement are estimated from data provided by its toolbar installed in the browsers of some Internet users. This feature monitors a user's surfing behavior who acts as a sample of all Internet users. It's for this reason that the Alexa rank although it can be a good way to compare the performance of one site against another, it is not necessarily the most accurate.
